Fighting for a Fairer, Greener Future for Furness
I am bidding to be selected by the Barrow and Furness Constituency Labour Party as its parliamentary candidate at the next general election. I am pleased that the process is underway and excited to be given the opportunity to be considered for this important role.
As someone who is born and raised in Furness my priorities are to protect Furness jobs, the environment, protect the NHS, re-energising high streets, support local businesses and the arts and bringing better opportunities for local housing.
We all deserve so much more in this region and Labour has the right plan for Furness to thrive in the future. I am 100% the right person to fight for Barrow and Furness and by working together we can create a Fairer, Greener Future for Furness.
I’m well-known locally for my previous work in music, community projects (owned two arts centres) and my involvement in local TV, film and the arts. Those that know me know I’ve been Labour all of my life and supported the previous two Barrow and Furness Labour MPs, including producing videos with our last MP. Though, as I held roles in journalism or TV, I was previously unable to be politically active personally.
I am a member of the Musicians Union. The NUJ and Community Union. I am extremely proud to have received official endorsement from NEC member Musician’s Union as their candidate of choice for Barrow and Furness.
As a Labour member moving from being a journalist to a commercial role, I was free-ed up and able to become more active locally with the Labour Party. In 2019/20 I was elected onto the Barrow and Furness Constituency Labour Party Executive Committee.
I have stayed active on the executive ever since and was elected into roles such as local party secretary and other roles in fund raising and membership.
I left my role as CLP secretary last summer to concentrate on my bid to be PPC for Barrow & Furness.
I’ve also been active locally canvassing, leafleting and fundraising and I was proud to be part of the team that helped in moving the local party HQ to its current home at Broadcasting House on Hartington St. Here we are able to steer community-led projects, events and party engagement across Furness. Helping local musicians and projects via our studio projects has been a particular passion.
In my day job, as publisher I have been proud to a active in exposing international financial scandals and in promoting sustainable investment.
If I am selected as PPC and able to be elected as MP I believe that my expertise and connections in sustainable investing in the City and internationally, in my current work will help bring in vital funds to the region to build a better future for Furness families and businesses.
Leadership
Gary will lead from the front to bring greater prosperity to Furness, while empowering our people and communities to build a better Furness and re-energise our town centres and high streets together.
Experience
Gary’s previous experience within Furness business, the arts and working closely with BAE Systems, added to current work in UK and International financial services puts him in the unique position of knowing what works in his home town and how to bring outside investment into the region.
Passion
Passion and pride are two of the most powerful attributes that can help drive change. Gary is passionate about Barrow and Furness and proud to have been born and raised here. These streets and these shores are where he is from and where he will fight for in Westminster if selected.
